Jane Altemen

HOW ARE THESE WORDS APPEARING?!

Upset your students with something that doesn't make sense.
Then you've got them!

CREATE THE NEED TO KNOW

Jane Altemen's Professional Biography:

I've been a teacher and administrator in Canada, the Middle East, Europe, and now South-East Asia.  In the classroom I teach Grades 11, 12 Chemistry, Grade 6 to 10 Science, Grade 6 to 10 Math. I run science clubs for youngsters in Kindergarten through to Grade 5.  I've enjoyed influencing best practice as Principal, Vice-Principal, Program Coordinator, and Head of Science.

With a degree in Neuroscience, my teaching practice is dominated by Brain-Based Learning, coupled with Visible Thinking Routines, and the Understanding by Design paradigm.

I've taught or been an administrator at:

  • NIST International School, Bangkok, Thailand
  • Sinarmas World Academy, nr Jakarta, Indonesia
  • United Nations International School Hanoi, Viet Nam
  • Munich International School, Munich, Germany
  • Ibn Khuldoon National School, Manama, Bahrain
  • Universal American School, Kuwait
  • Toronto Board of Education, Ontario, Canada

MY favourite lesson moments are when I:

1. Get them on the edge of their seat and just as I am about to pour two chemicals together I abruptly stop and shout "PREDICT!" The students know I won't continue the event until they’ve given a justified guess about what might happen next.
  • We must get our students’ attention if we want them to inquire authentically.
2. Correctly forecast misconceptions students will have about the concepts.
  • For true understanding, the brain must construct its own connections and it is easy for misunderstandings to be propagated long-term if left undetected.
3. Help students correct their misconceptions.
  • Metacognitive thinkers become independent learners.

My Inquiry Based Curriculum Work published in:

  • Heidi Hayes Jacobs and Ann Johnson, The Curriculum Mapping
                Planner, ASCD, 2009 ISBN        1416608745

I'm about HELPING kids, HELPING TEACHERS AND SCIENCE
